Description

Luliu Hatieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, is the oldest medical education institution in Transylvania, a continuation of the Faculty of Medicine which was founded in 1919, as a part of the Superior Dacia University. It was named in honor of the scientist Luliu Hațieganu.

The university has over 6,000 national and international students, 2,400 resident physicians, and over 1,100 teachers and researchers.

Founded in 1775, the medical-surgical school was upgraded in 1816 by Károly Kisfaludy, to become a medical-surgical high school. In 1872, the Hungarian Faculty of Medicine was founded in Cluj. Medical and pharmaceutical education witnessed a major transformation after the union of Transylvania with Romania. In 1919, the Faculty of Medicine was established as a part of Superior Dacia University. The name was changed to “University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Cluj in 1945. Medicine is considered one of the oldest sciences – Hippocrates (460 BC – 370 BC) is considered to be the father of medicine in Greece.

Presently Luliu University consists of 3 main faculties:

  • Faculty of Medicine
  • Faculty of Dentistry
  • Faculty of Pharmacy
