Description

Georgian American University was established in 2001 as an MBA project of Elene Jamarjashvili during her study at Atlanta State University (USA). Initially at starting it was designed as a School of Law with the graduates to be granted a Junior Doctor (JD) degree. In Atlanta Elene met Kenneth A. Cutshaw who is a prominent lawyer in US and Europe and interested in the establishment of the university and agreed to help for the university establishment with one of the leading American Law Schools – American University’s Washington College of Law (Washington, DC) in the partnership. In 2002, Elene returned to Tbilisi and began to refine the business plan and look for the suitable investors, and at the same time she met R. Michael Cowgill who is the US-funded consultant to the Georgian Government for implementing the Baku-Ceyhan (BTC) and South Caucasus (SCP) pipeline projects. After that MR. Cowgill agreed to advise Ms. Jamarjashvili and become the University President. 


In 2005, in Tbilisi, the demand for a truly western University was so pronounced that in spite of the fact that at that time there were already two international business schools in operation, the interest was substantial enough in a program which offering joint programs in Business and Law and to move forward with the opening of a Business School and Law School at the Georgian American University. In 2005 February, a joint limited liability company of American and Georgian investors was formed and this dedicated group with its Board of Directors established financial and operational management standards which aligned with the strict international, ethical and educational standards necessary and this group also come a wide range of knowledge and experience which includes Experience with the United States, Georgian and International Law, Experience with the United States, Georgian and International Business, Banking, Finance and Management sectors, Public relations in Georgia and Internationally, Experience with the United States, Georgian and International education systems and Experience with the United States government.
GAU experiences many changes, challenges and successes with time. As per the demand of the market, new programs have been introduced which is further developing and improving the existing ones. Perfection of the educational process as well as the management of the University is in the hands of each Founder, Board Member, Faculty and Staff Member. 
 
GAU added the International Relations and Diplomacy Program to its Law School, which resulting in the name change to the Law and Social Sciences School in 2011/2012. Due to its success GAU opened the Natural Sciences and Engineering School in the same academic year. GAU added the Liberal Education and Humanitarian Sciences School in the academic year of 2013-2014. As per regular basis GAU students have unique opportunities through internships with local work organizations and they are also able to participate in foreign university exchange programs. In the academic year of 2012-2013 GAU moved to a new campus location which is more in line with its high university standards. Building of 6000 sqm contains large classrooms, a modern library/computer center, cafe, gym, auditoriums and a theatre. All of this together with expansive grounds creates a pleasant and productive academic environment.
